This 27-Year-Old Ex-Facebook Engineer Is Putting Healthy Dieting On Autopilot


With the rise of fitness crazes such as Peloton, Barry’s Bootcamp, and SoulCycle, there is unprecedented consumer interest in healthy dieting. In order to meet this growing consumer demand for healthy food options, thousands of emerging direct-to-consumer food brands are popping up to make healthy eating easier for consumers. Launching this week, Modern Basket aims to put your healthy diet on autopilot. 

Modern Basket provides a way to discover and shop for foods and brands based on your health needs and values. The invite-only service focuses on a concierge-like, personalized curation for each customer through leveraging machine learning technology. What Stitchfix did for fashion, Modern Basket is doing for food—giving consumers a selection of independent brands you won’t be able to find at your local store. 

Vera Kutsenko, founder and CEO of Modern Basket, founded the company because she believes the grocery shopping experience is fundamentally broken. Kutsenko shared, “I typically shop at 2-3 grocery stores as well as online in order to get all of my groceries. I spend time trying to sort through ingredients and filter for quality and diet. I search for healthy foods on Instagram and online in order to fill gaps in my diet that I can’t find at a local spot. That’s when I realized that something is broken. Why can’t I get all of these in one spot?”

Before founding Modern Basket, Kutsenko worked as an engineer at Facebook and Uber. While there, she became a personal trainer and coached over a hundred people on healthy eating. The idea for Modern Basket stemmed from Kutsenko’s personal need for easily accessible and convenient healthy foods in one place and the struggle she noticed her clients face when adjusting to new eating habits. She found that when access to healthy foods became easy and convenient for her clients—they were able to successfully stick to their new diets. 

Modern Basket aims to make sticking with a new diet easier for people by making healthy food more easily accessible for everyone. Kutsenko shared, “Our customers love us because we save them time, help them discover and try new products, and make their diet easy!” She explained that Modern Basket’s mission is to leverage technology and machine learning in order to impact an entire supply chain, empower consumers to live their lifestyle, and empower food brands to scale and reach the right customers. 

Kutsenko shared a few key learnings from her entrepreneurship journey. She advises other founders to relentlessly focus on customers and traction, and warns them not to get distracted by superficial milestones like fundraising or vanity metrics. “Unfortunately, sometimes people judge your success as an entrepreneur by superficial milestones. However, these milestones don’t mean you built a sustainable business,” she shared. Focus on why you started the company, talk to your customers, and really deeply understand the problem they are facing.

Kutsenko believes it’s important for entrepreneurs to be grounded and convicted in their own personal beliefs. “Everyone will have an opinion on what you should do with your business. While advice is good, and I advise you to listen, you also need to develop your own framework for how to evaluate advice,” Kutsenko advised. She shared that she experienced the most growth as an entrepreneur when she developed her own internal compass and conviction in what she’s doing, and how to process the advice she receives.
