Added value is another big trend in grooming at the moment, which is why American Crew’s 3-in-1 shampoo will wash and condition your hair, while cleaning your body too (don’t tell anyone, but we’ve been washing with shampoo for years). Usually, shampoo/conditioner combos can make your hair limp and greasy, but American Crew’s 3-in-1 steers well clear of that.

Started in Australia by a man with long hair who couldn’t find a shampoo he wanted, Mr Smith will probably appear on your girlfriend’s shelf first. We say: steal it or buy a re-up as a ‘gift’. The shampoo smells great, doesn’t contains sulphates or parabens and is PETA-certified, meaning it’s never been tested on animals, either — eco-kudos never smelt so good.

Prepare your hair
Sachajuan Volume spray
This is a clever update on men’s haircare’s latest innovation: styling dust. Usually shaken from a little tube, Sachajuan have pressurised theirs into an aerosol, allowing you to apply it like hair spray. It’s a more efficient way of using the product but it runs out fast so use it sparingly.

Fudge Urban anti-gravity powder
This ‘dust’ (it’s actually silica sulphate) makes your hair thicker and full of volume, prepping it for the product you want to put on over the top. Your hair needs to be completely dry before you apply it otherwise it will dissolve, and don’t expect to be able to run your fingers through it either.

Hanz de Fuko clay
Styling products are often full of compromises. For instance: if you want a strong hold, you’ll need a heavy wax base. But that means it won’t be water soluble. Hanz De Fuko’s Claymation suffers no such settlement. Instead it holds like glue, washes out easily and isn’t greasy.

Patricks M3 Matte finish pomade
A hair product claiming that it’s water resistant to 300m (that’s about 85m more than the current world freedive record depth, so you’ll be fine) seems superfluous, but at least you know Patricks will stand up to more than a rain shower. It also contains Saw Palmetto, a fruit extract which is thought to block the production of DHT, the enzyme that causes male hairloss. A real multitasker, then.

Rescue your hair
For the mornings when your mop is really not playing ball, pull this stuff out, but be warned: it’s the haircare equivalent of making a deal with the devil. It will tame and hold your hair all day but is difficult to wash out easily.
