Free-range lamb and goat, cage-free chicken and smoked salmon sound like something from a health food store.
That’s exactly what it is, but it is not for humans.
“We are like the Whole Foods for pets,” said Melissa Maley, manager of PetPeople.
PetPeople recently opened in Center of Bonita Springs plaza. It is one of five PetPeople in Southwest Florida and 57 nationwide.
“There is no corn, wheat or soy” in our food, Maley said. “We use all natural ingredients.”
A bulk biscuit shelf touts treats made from chicken and veggies, peanut butter and blueberry, salmon and coconut or grain free roast duck hearts. Boxed dog treats come in flavors such as duck and peas, lamb and apple and mackerel and greens. There are fish and venison jerky treats along with ones made from turkey with cranberries.
Bags of dog food are stamped with labels showing they are gluten free, all natural and made from top ingredients. Bold worded labels state that the food is from free range animals.
It’s also not just the typical chicken, fish and beef you find in most pet products. Dog food flavors include things such as duck, turkey, quail, bison, venison, goat and elk.
“It’s a lot of things you don’t see at the big stores,” said Scott Dahlheimer assistant manager.
The all natural Whole Foods kind of experience is not contained to just the food. PetPeople has oatmeal and aloe shampoo, pumpkin latte, natural toothpaste, herbal bug spray, herbal flea and tick collars and more.
Maley said Bonita Springs was the perfect place for the newest PetPeople store.
“It is a seasonal location so a lot of the people that come down her have seen our stores in Ohio and Michigan so they know our stores, and it is just a good place for business.
Maley //said she// hopes that that business will pick up once people realize the new store is there and is open.
Christa Whelan said she discovered PetPeople and has come several times. She visited the store recently with her dogs Lucy and Nutmeg. She also has three cats.
“I like that they have a lot of different products for cats,” Whelan said. “Most places don’t have this many products for cats. They carry a wide selection for dogs too. And the prices are fair.”
Whelan said her dogs love coming to PetPeople because they are always given treats and she likes it because of all the healthy food she can find for her pets.
“My animals eat better than I do,” she said. “My dogs and can’t choose what they eat, but I can so I want to feed them the best.”
