WE’RE all washing our hair way too much and it’s leaving our locks frizzy and wispy.
So says Pantene expert hairstylist Barney Martin who revealed in Mamamia how often you should shampoo depending on your hair and skin type – and why no one should wash their locks on a daily basis…
1. Oily skin
If you’re prone to oily skin, your hair’s likely to get greasier too.
Barney recommends shampooing every other day and rinsing your hair with water on the days in between, followed by a dry shampoo.
Washing your hair every day strips it of its natural oils, so is never a good solution.
2. Thick, curly hair
If your hair is thick, coarse or curly, you should wash every third day.
Your locks are likely to be more porous, meaning they could get dehydrated if you wash too much.
Again, rinse without shampoo on the other days, and make sure you use conditioner to stop your locks drying out.
How often should you shampoo?
- Oily skin: Every other day, using dry shampoo in between washes.
- Thick, curly hair: Every third day.
- Fine hair: Every other day.
- Gym bunnies: Every other day.
- Swimmers: Straight after swimming, using a clarifying shampoo.
3. Fine hair
Fine hair can get limp if you don’t wash it enough, but every other day should still be fine.
Rinse it with water on the days in between, to get rid of any excess oil.
4. Gym bunnies
Gym bunnies are also advised not to wash every day, even if you’ve been working out.
A rinse with water and dry shampoo after hitting the gym should do the trick.
The only exception is swimmers – it’s important to get the chlorine or salt water out of your hair asap, and Barney recommends a clarifying shampoo for this.
