Making healthy eating a lifestyle

WANT to lose weight in a sustainable way? You can do this by choosing healthier food options instead of resorting to fad diets, advised celebrity chef Daniel Green.

He made a special appearance at The St Regis Kuala Lumpur to create guilt-free gourmet food for the hotel’s suite retreat programme.

“Skipping meals and going for low-calorie dishes will make you lose weight but it is not sustainable.

“Instead, choose a plan that fits your lifestyle,” said Green, who is also a TV personality and award-winning author known as The Model Cook.

He said making better food choices would help people lose weight and keep it off.

Green served up healthy dishes such as Cauliflower Pancake made from grated cauliflower garnished with smoked salmon, edamame and spinach, as well as poached eggs with salmon, edamame and avocado puree.

He said people who want to lose weight should avoid excessive carbohydrates and fried food.

“If you want to have some carbohydrates such as rice or oats, have it in the morning for breakfast. Too much carbs for lunch

will result in spikes of insulin and you will be tired. If you want to have nasi lemak, do it earlier in the day.

“Dinner should comprise more protein and you can be creative with vegetables. Make something interesting like cauliflower pancake.

“You will realise that you don’t need so much noodles or rice,” added Green, who has promoted healthy eating in Britain, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates and the United States.

With quality ingredients like the ones available at The St Regis, it is much easier to put together healthier dishes, said Green.

“The St Regis offers good ingredients such as imported salmon from Scotland.

“Food with good flavour does not need cheese or butter. I do not use butter in most of my cooking,” said Green, who has designed meals for three airlines.

Having worked in Malaysia before, Green is familiar with Malaysian food.

He advised locals to change their eating patterns if they want to lose weight.

He advised people to make the “bad” food a treat for the weekend.

“Eat healthy from Monday to Friday and enjoy a little over the weekend with your friends and family instead of dieting all the time.“If you have bad eating habits all week, you will not lose weight,” he said.

For breakfast, he suggested consuming more eggs and protein-based food, vegetables and fruits.

“Make an omelette using three egg whites and a yolk. Egg whites are a good source of protein and it will keep you full.

“Although I love cheese, I only have it once a week.

“I enjoy it better as a treat. If I am busy and on the go, I will have some almonds,” said Green, adding that he became an advocate for healthy eating because he enjoys it himself.
