According to the NPD Group’s David Portalatin, the number of consumers cooking at home for themselves increased, while visits to restaurants fell flat in May of 2018. Portalatin explains that this could be because of the rising cost of restaurant meals mixed with the growing popularity of streaming entertainment. NPD says that 4 out of every 5 meals are prepared in U.S. kitchens.

Because health and wellness is now a big cause for concern, younger members of this generation are promoting healthy food and drink trends.
3. Drinks Get Energized with Healthier Ingredients
According to a survey by the International Food Information Council Foundation, consumers are looking for a healthier alternative than traditional energy drinks to kickstart their day. They want beverages that are energizing due to natural ingredients, that have also been fortified with vitamins. This market is expected to grow at 8.86% annually from 2017 to 2021.
4. Probiotic Ice Cream Increases Shelf Life

Researchers at the University of Caratagena added probiotic capsules to aloe vera ice cream and found an increase in 44% increase in shelf life and better viability. The Daily Reporter said that, “The findings represent huge opportunities for manufacturers to economically develop functional varieties of ice cream.”
5. Consumers Prefer the Term ‘Plant-Based’ to Vegan
According to Food Navigator, in a recent survey, 80% of consumers prefer the term plant-based to vegan when describing their diet containing no meat, dairy, or animals products. This is because the term plant-based is more flexible, and describes food that is healthier, not just vegan.
6. Mastering Diabetes Joins American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s Roundtable
Mastering Diabetes, founded by two people living with type 1 diabetes, focuses on reversing insulin resistance and diabetes complications through a low-fat, plant-based whole food approach. This online program will now be added to the American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s corporate roundtable and will empower millions of people living with all forms of diabetes.
7. Hawaii Becomes the First U.S. State to Ban Chlorpyrifos
After several years of community organizing, Hawaii has become the first state in the U.S. to ban the use of chlorpyrifos, a highly toxic pesticide with the potential to produce damaging neurological effects in children. After December 31, 2022, chlorpyrifos will be permanently banned in Hawaii with no exceptions made for any agrochemical company.
8. Demand for Fruit and Vegetable Powders is Growing
According to Ingredients Network, consumers are looking to increase produce consumption through products that have been enhanced with nutrient-rich fruit and vegetable powders. By 2022, this industry could hit $216 billion with an annual growth rate of 5.8%!
