CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.— Hot and fresh is the motto for the newest food truck to grace the Greater Lafayette area.

Fat Bottom Donuts, owned by Nate and Hayley Kaelin, has been operating out of Crawfordsville for just over a month, beginning to work their way into Lafayette.

Hayley said owning a business was something the couple had long been interested in, and after deciding on operating a food truck, the other aspects began to fall into place.

“Our 13-year-old son loves doughnuts, and he was the one who gave us the idea to think in that direction,” Hayley said. “The name came from him, too, after he put out a poll on Facebook with three different name options, and Fat Bottom Donuts was the one that won.”

Hayley said their goal is to keep the menu simple, with highlights of of glazed yeast and flavored cake doughnuts, but one of their specialties is a cronut: a croissant prepared like a doughnut.

With a deep-frier on the truck, everything is made to order, leaving customers with hot doughnuts in their hands.

“Sometimes people can get upset about having to wait, but once they take that first bite they realize it is all worth it,” Nate said.

Frequently pairing up with Sheepdog Coffee Company for parking events, Nate said Nathan Biddle, owner of Sheepdog Coffee Company, has been a huge help in navigating the beginnings of operating a food truck business.

“This has really been a venture where once we decided to pursue it, all of the doors began opening up and it really fell into place,” Nate said.

The doughnut makers have several selling dates lined up for the Greater Lafayette area in the coming weeks at other area businesses, with graduation season coming just around the corner, Nate said.
