What is to be done to keep the brain healthy? What foods help in this? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.
Answer by Tara Swart, Neuroscientist, MD, Executive Advisor, Author of The Source, on Quora:
This starts with nourishing your body to be in as healthy a state as possible. Regular body scanning (an exercise in the book which I can describe in summary) is a great place to start. Where is there tension? What do you notice? Research shows that taking a good quality pro-biotic for a month reduces anxiety and stress. So try this and see how differently you feel. Over time, begin to pay more attention to that feeling of goose flesh, or the little hairs on the back of your neck standing on end, nervous laughter, sweating or blushing. Journaling is a great way to get to know your body and your mind better and I speak a lot about this in ‘The Source’.
Also eat as much oily fish, eggs, nuts and seeds, green leafy vegetables, avocado, olives and coconut oil as you can. Drink four cups of green tea per week and take the right supplements that you need.
Rest your brain with 7-9 hours sleep per night. Hydrate your neurons with half a liter of water for every 30lb of body weight. Oxygenate your brain by walking 5000-10,000 steps per day and doing 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week. Meditate for 20 minutes a day.
