A baby in Japan who went viral after her mother shared photos of the infant’s unusually long hair recently landed a modeling gig with Pantene.
Baby Chanco, a now a 1-year-old, is featured in Pantene Japan’s #HairWeGo campaign that celebrates how hair “moves me forward.” The company said a People magazine article saying the girl should have her own Pantene ad sparked the idea.
“I’m so surprised with the reaction, but also very proud of the praise from many countries,” Chanco’s mother Mami Kano told USA TODAY in a statement.
The magazine wrote about Baby Chanco over the summer, when the then 6-month-old had grown a thick mane that appeared almost unreal in social media photos. (Pantene assures USA TODAY that her hair is real!)
Since then, the girl has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, gushing over photos of the girl’s hair that now reaches well beyond her chin and is often styled with bows.
Pantene released a short video featuring Baby Chanco’s “Hairy Tale,” featuring baby photos of the girl that have been both celebrated and criticized. The video ends with a message for people to love their differences.
The company also featured the girl in an ad on Jan. 7 alongside a Japanese TV announcer who gained popularity for her gray hair.
As for the future of that famous head of hair, Baby Chanco’s mother tells People she plans to keep the girl’s hair long and might start braiding it.
